Incipit

The beginning words or notes of a musical composition. One recognizable incipit would be the famous four- note theme of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. the first few words (often the first line or the intonation) of a work; the incipit commonly functions like a modern-day title to identify the work in question. in Gregorian chant, the first words sung by the cantor before the chorus
