DEFINITION
(monophonic) a paraliturgical strophic genre sometimes called the "versus" for its poetic structure; it is thought to have accompanied movement of a celebrant from one station to another within a church. (polyphonic) a thirteenth-century genre based on newly composed material. All voices move together (it is homorhythmic) and sing the same text. Contrasts with the motet. a type of medieval song with Latin verses on a secular or religious theme
