DEFINITION
The placement of the left hand when performing on a stringed instrument. The placement of the slide when playing a trombone. There are seven positions on a typical trombone. The position of a chord; the common positions are: root position: (fundamental position) when the lowest voiced note of a chord is the tonic of the chord. First inversion: when the third of the chord is the lowest voiced note of the chord. Second inversion: when the fifth of the chord is the lowest voiced note of the chord.
